5 Biggest Mistakes that Keep Candidates From Landing the Job They Want

Mistake #1:

You think that shooting off resumes to as many jobs out there in your area is the best way to get your name out there.

You’ve done it before (I admit I have too)…in an act of wanting to feel like you are accomplishing something to get you interviews, you send out your resume to as many places as possible.  After searching online for as many places as possible, copy & pasting your resume several times, you feel like all you need to do is wait for the pharmacy/potential employer to call you.

Mistake #2:

You get lazy and create a generic resume that gets sent off everywhere and make really minor adjustments.  You know yourself how well you’d do the job, but you are unable to convey that in a compelling way to a hiring manager.

You know you will be good in the position that you are applying for, but you are not used to crafting your resume to market yourself.  You’ve never thought about it as a marketing-actually, that word makes you uncomfortable.  Or, you realize the resume is a tool to market yourself, but even though you know how well you’d do the job in your head, you are unable to translate that onto paper to convince a hiring manager.  Let’s face it, not all of us are great with persuasive writing.

Mistake #3:

You are applying where everyone else is applying. Your main method of finding a job is to go online & run searches to see what’s out there when you get a chance. You haven’t seen available jobs in the areas you want, or haven’t had as many responses as you would have liked.  You write it off as there just not being enough jobs open, when actually you are not tapping into the hidden job market.   You are serious about finding a job, but don’t realize that you are leaving opportunities on the table because you are missing out on opportunities that are not even advertised online.

Mistake #4:  You interviewed and didn’t convince the employer to hire you.  When you received an interview, you had already won half the battle.  You got noticed & were asked in for an interview, but you blew it!

You had your foot in the door, but you didn’t make it in.  When you have been asked for an interview and you are qualified for the job, the ball is in your court to do what you can to get a job offer.  But you screwed up your chances when you had it.

Mistake #5:  You bring up the salary at an inappropriate stage of the process and turn an employer off.

I can remember a perfect example of this one.  I had an extremely talented clinical pharmacist with oncology experience applying for a job she would have qualified for and had an interest in, who brought up the salary at an inappropriate stage of the conversation.  That was one of the main impressions that the employer had about the candidate and it did not help her.  It was over at that point.

I’ve just shared with you some of the major mistakes candidates are making right now and not landing them the position they want.  There is so much more to cover to get you to where you need to be.

Remember how the running joke was that if you’re a pharmacist who breathes, you will be paid $90-$100k?  If you haven’t heard it yet, it is not that easy right now.  The pharmacist job market has tightened up, and the best candidate wins. I spoke to a hospital recently that had trouble hiring this time last year.  Now they have received 50 pharmacist applications for one vacancy.  A friend of mine told me recently that there were 175 applications for Albertson’s in Phoenix for 2 pharmacist positions!  The reality of it is that there is more competition in your job search than there was a year ago, or even half a year ago.  You must stand out, or you will not get the position you want.  It is not optional anymore.

How are you going to stand out among 50 applications?

The truth is, you and I both know that how well you present yourself in an application & interview doesn’t always correlate with how well you can do the job.  Here’s the secret:  You just need to market yourself better.

As pharmacists, we are trained to be knowledgeable about medications, care for our patients, and maybe on management or other specialized areas of pharmacy.  We are not trained to market ourselves.  But that’s what you need to do to land a job in this market.  Pharmacies are no longer hiring any pharmacist who meets minimum qualifications.

Do you know how to catch the hiring manager’s attention in 10 seconds with your application? If they see red flags, or decide that your experience doesn’t match up, they will go to the next person’s.

How about acing an interview & “closing the deal”? You have one chance to make your impression when you have their attention—are you taking advantage of the chance you have?

The good news is that even though there is more competition for jobs than before, there are still jobs out there for pharmacists.  We are lucky to be in the healthcare industry that is not as hard hit as areas like the information technology industry.  We still have options, but we have more competition that we are not used to having.

Most pharmacists are missing pieces to a successful job search.  They are either good at the job, but not good at getting noticed or getting interviews.  Some are good at getting noticed, but wonder what happened because they either weren’t offered a job after the interview, or were offered a job but not the salary they wanted.  Others may be great at the interview, but have trouble getting noticed.

And guess what?  You are not alone.

If you aren’t good with even one step of the job search process and don’t have a well-planned out strategy to land the job you want, then you are missing out on your chances of landing the job you want.

Because so many pharmacists have been asking us for our help with this, we put together this program that makes it easy for you and walks you step-by-step thru the entire process of giving yourself the edge to your job search.

We have been hearing this more & more in the last few months, and the situation is not looking like it will change anytime soon.  Pharmacists with a lot of experience are coming to me, saying they are not getting interviews.  And when they do, they are not landing the job they want even though they are qualified for the position.

Raving Review
“Chen, I just needed to convey to you what a difference it made after I listened to what you had to say….I have been a clinical inpatient pharmacist with several years of experience.   I went to a couple of interviews recently–both of which I did not get—I couldn’t understand what I was lacking or did not have that the other candidates did.  After finding you and learning from you, I have just accepted a full-time investigational drug pharmacist position at a reputable hospital.

The position is ideal, not only b/c of the m-f ,8-4:30 thing, but also b/c it is going to be challenging and different from anything that i have ever done in the past.

Thank you so much…I have been to so many interviews in the past year, but after taking all of your advice, I felt very confident during my interview (i even had to do a Powerpoint presentation).  So please continue doing what you are doing and I truly believe that it will help many pharmacists out there that are in frustrating, dead end and non-fulfilling positions.

Thank you, thank you, and thank you again.”

My goal for you: To prepare you to give yourself the edge over your competition (other applicants) in the job search process. You come away being confident in getting noticed during the application process and in mastering your interview skills, and feel comfortable in asking for the job, negotiating the best salary, and closing the deal. You will also learn a proprietary 5-point analysis of your resume that will transform the way you are looked at by a hiring

The reason why I created this program is because I am tired of seeing you struggle.  There is no reason to struggle.  Go the shortcut route.  Take advantage of an expert who knows what hiring managers are looking for, can help you cut to the chase, and save you time & money in your job hunt.  How much money do you lose by not working for 1 more day?  Think about what it is worth to you to have the whole pieces to the puzzle.  I want you to have the edge to better your chances of landing the job you want.

Create a Winning Strategy to Get Noticed – You will learn a step-by-step way to create a winning strategy that works in this market right now.

Write Resumes that Stand Out – You will learn the keys to making your resume stand out from the rest, and learn from live resume makeover coaching that was done in the program. I don’t want you to just get lots of information, but actually be able to put it to use in a step-by-step process. That is why I want you to experience learning this way–because it is more effective than listening to a lecture. This is not school! This is real life.

Get Noticed for Interviews – Getting noticed for interviews does not involve just having a resume that stands out. There is a secret process I will teach you, so you are doing what few pharmacists are doing. Taking action on just one action step that is taught in this part of the program can get your foot in the door.

Acing the Interview – You will hear live role playing of a typical interview, and then hear the critique on how to improve on it.

Closing the Deal – You will learn how to close the deal. Most pharmacists are not sure how to ask for the job. I will show you exactly what to say to close the deal confidently.

How to Artfully Follow-Up Without Stalking – I will teach you the fine line between stalking & not following up enough. You will know just how much to follow up to get the job you want.

Negotiating the Best Salary – learn how to get the best salary possible, given your value to the employer. Most people often leave money on the table when they are negotiating for the best salary possible.

You will walk away from the program feeling confident about the way you approached your job search.  You will have more control over how your job search goes–you won’t have to spray your resume everywhere, and pray for results anymore.  You will know what to do to give yourself the best chances to land the job you want, rather than fall back in the old ways of how you’ve always done things.  It won’t work in this tight job market.

“I have known Chen for more than ten years. During this time I have served with her on many committees. The most impressionable being Operation Immunization, a division that Chen founded at Ohio State University and presided over. Under Chen’s leadership, we took the organization to the APhA convention in 1998 and received many awards for it. I could think of no one I would rather have coaching me to help me find my ideal job. Chen has put together a solid program at a very reasonable price that can help you land the job that you have wanted for so long.

Jeff P., President of Academy of Pharmacy of Central Ohio (Columbus, OH)

Your Faculty/Coach
Chen Yen, RPh, PharmD

Chen Yen is a pharmacist who has provided staffing to Native American reservations for 8 years.  While serving as a pharmacist, she found pharmacies frustrated with inconsistencies of staffing quality.  She also noticed that some pharmacists were looking for job changes, but many didn’t have time to search thoroughly for themselves.  When pharmacists searched for other opportunities, they were unhappy with recruiters who did not understand their needs.  Chen set out to create a niche by helping pharmacists find the right job for their personality in both temp & direct hire pharmacist positions throughout the country.  Matching and final selection is completed by one who understands pharmacists, not just a trained recruiter.  Her dream is that every pharmacist works in a setting where their talent is used best & where they enjoy their work environment.

Chen has been featured in Pharmacy Week and is a published author in the Journal of American Pharmacist Association.  She is the recipient of a national award for initiating an immunization program in her area.  Chen holds a PharmD from the University of Washington and a B.S. in Pharmacy from Ohio State University, where she attended on full scholarship and was honored with multiple awards in her visionary leadership roles. She enjoys traveling, dancing ballet, playing the violin, meditating, and cooking.

Chen is optimistic that every pharmacist can find a job that’s the most suitable for his/her personality & talents.  She wants every pharmacist to experience joy in their work & life.

Ok, don’t tell anyone this, but I have not always been good at getting noticed & interviewing.  In fact, I still remember applying to work at Lenscrafters one summer during college, and I was asked to tell them about myself.  I started to tell them where I was born, where we moved to, etc.  You might laugh that you are beyond doing something like this right now, but the lesson I want to point out here is the word “relevance”.  Is your whole approach to your search right now relevant, both in the way you are applying and in the way you are marketing yourself?

If you are not getting the results you want, chances are there is something you do not know, or something you are not doing.  If you already know it, then do it!  If you don’t, I am here to give you a shortcut.  This is the beauty of participating in a program like this, because I am here to hold you accountable to taking action and giving expert training & coaching to get you further in your job search.

One of the main reasons I am offering it to you now is that some of you cannot wait for this.  The “Get the Edge!” Program will go for public launch in a month and the tuition will likely be higher.  You need to get some action happening & things moving along right now, because it is costing you by not starting to apply now.  This is an accelerated program because I know that most of you want to start seeing results soon.  As an added bonus, you will have the opportunity to access the program at a discount.

You are also lucky, because you have access to our pre-launch prices right now before it is unveiled for our full launch.  My only request is that you give me feedback about how you like the teleseminar program and how to make it even better.  I want students who will be transformed by this, not just to enroll in the program and not do anything with it.

*You will be provided with proprietary step-by-step worksheets & visual Powerpoint slides to get the most out of the program.

You will receive instant access to this 4 session “Get the Edge!” teleseminar series (90-min each) after you enroll. You still have access to our pre-launch prices right now before we unveil the program for a full launch.  Take advantage of it while you can!

100% Money-Back Guarantee- Because I Know this Program Works

To make it easy on you, I will give you a money-back guarantee if you enroll & listen to the whole program, do as you are taught (including all the worksheets and listening to all the calls), and decide that the course wasn’t worth what you paid for it.  Within 2 weeks of enrolling in the teleseminar program, you may request a refund.  Many of my colleagues have told me I am crazy for doing this, because I would have already given away all my materials, but I will leave it to you to look me in the eye and tell me it wasn’t worth what you paid for it.  *You must fax me the completed worksheets & documentation of the action steps you took which you were taught in the program to receive the refund.

How much more money do you plan to lose by not working for 1 more day?  Think about what it is worth to you to have a job offer one day sooner.  Working for a few hours more than covers the tuition of the program.  It is time that you invested in yourself, and stop worrying whether you will land the job you want.

There are programs out there that teach you how to create a winning resume & do well in interviews.  I have seen them.  They charge as much as $1895 for any program that involves any kind of coaching.  However, there is no other program that teaches you specifically about how to stand out for a pharmacist position from the beginning to end, from the perspective of a pharmacist who understands the profession AND knows what hiring managers are looking for.  I have seen programs (none as much in depth as this one–I am spilling out some secrets in this program that I am actually wondering whether I should have). I wanted to make this as affordable as possible to you, even though I know you can afford this if you really cared to make an investment in yourself.  I wanted you to have no excuses to not take the leap.  So I am offering it to you for 40% off New Year’s special!

Free Bonus Gift: Originally the program was designed to be four 1-hr sessions, but I gifted everyone Bonus Q&A time during the calls, so the calls were actually 90-min in length.  You will have access to hear questions that pharmacists like you have in their job search process & my answers to their questions. It is not easy to get access to me to straight up answer these types of questions.

That being said, giving you all the reasons to enroll, I want to be very clear that I only want to attract a select group of people who are serious about taking action to get results.

This program is NOT for you if…

This program is NOT for you if you are not coachable.  If you think you are doing everything you already know to do, and don’t think that anything can really help you with landing a job, then don’t sign up.  I only want to work with those who are committed to see what they are not already seeing.

This program is NOT for you if you plan on attending the course, but don’t plan to do your part of taking action with the step-by-step process that I am going to give you.  I want you to see results, not just get educated and do nothing with it.

It is NOT for you if you do not want to spend the money.  I want students who don’t need to be convinced of the value of getting a job.  I don’t want students who want to complain that they cannot afford tuition, when the reality is they can make it back with a few hours of work.

Note: I am going to be sharing secrets with you about landing the job you want, but I cannot get you to be offered a job you are absolutely not qualified for.  However, I can help you with getting noticed if you have the experience for the position.

It is for you if you are committed and want to get the edge!  You can wait and lose out on your chances first by applying the way you have always applied & interviewed.   Or, you can take action now to give yourself the best chance possible right now.  It’s up to you.
